A Clinical Study of Inguinal Hernia in the Children




Abstract
This study is retrospective review and analysis of 600 cases of inguinal hernia under the age of fifteen years operated at the Department of General Surgery, Taegu Catholic University, School of Medicine, during 11 years from January, 1983 to
December,
1993.
@ES The results were as follows;
@EN 1) Male to female ratio was 2.85 : 1.
2) The operations were performed under the age of 1 year in 85 cases(14.2%), under the age of 5 years in 369 cases(61.4%).
3) 326 cases(54.3%) were on right side, 209 cases(349%) were on left side and 65 cases(10.8%) were on both sides of 600 cases of ingunal hernia.
4) The most comon common complaint was reducible mass in inguinal area(471cases, 78.5%).
5) 214 cases(35.6%) were discovered befor the age of 1 year, 495 cases(84.1%) were discovered before the age of 5 years.
6) The operation was delayed from the first notice more than 6 months in 285 cases(47.5%), more than 1 year in 217 cases(36.2%).
7) In 68 cases of bilateral inguinal hernia, the operations were perfomed at first on right side in 17 cases, on left side in 21 cases, and on both sides at the same time in 27 cases.
8) In bilateral inguinal hernia, 13 caes(34.2%) were admitted for repair of contra la teral hernia within 1 year.
9) among 600 cases of inguinal hernia, incarcerated inguinal hernias were 64 cases, and 24 cases of tem were incarcerated before 1 year of age.
10) The contents of hernial sac were small bowel(31.3%), omentum(15.7%), cecum(3%), ovary and fallopian tube(3%).
11) The incidence of associated other congenital anomalies with inguinal hernia was 11.3%, and hydrocele was the most Lommon of them.
12) Combined operations were hydrocelectomy, orchiopexy, etc.
13) Postoperative complications were scrotal swelling, fever, wound infection and recurrence.
14) Most of the patients were discharged at first day after operation.
15) Recurrence of inguinal hernia
16) Incarcerated inguinal hernia was predominant in bilateral inguinal hernia, in male, and under the age of 1 year.
